Für die Wüste bei Las Vegas hat der Schweizer Künstler Ugo Rondinone „7 Magic Mountains“ geschaffen. Beauftragt vom Nevada Museum of Art, zeigen die bis zu 10 Meter hohen, farbintensiven Skulpturen eine Landschaft zwischen geologischer Formation und abstrakter Komposition.
Auf Kickstarter konnte für das 3.5 Mio. Dollar-Projekt das Ziel von 50.000 Dollar Kostenbeteiligung erreicht werden: 258 Unterstützer spendeten 64.205 Dollar. Rondinones Interesse an Steinen ist auch familiär begründet: Vor drei Jahren verriet er, dass sein italienischer Vater als Kind in den süditalienischen Höhlensiedlungen Sassi di Matera aufwuchs. In den 1950er Jahren musste sein Clan die Sassi verlassen – und damit eine 9000jährige Familientradition beenden.
Zu „Seven Magic Stones“ schreibt Rondinone: „Seven Magic Mountains is an artwork of thresholds and crossings, of seclusion and gathering, of balanced marvels and excessive colors, and the contrary air between the desert and the city lights. Seven Magic Mountains elicits continuities and solidarities between the artificial and the natural, between human and nature. What centers this amalgam of contradictions is the spiritual aspiration;
